So I recently purchased this book called "Gardening for Independence" for $1.00 at a library book sale. Written by Mort and Barbara Mather, the copyright says 1978. Scouring through the used book sale, I knew I had found what I was looking for. This book is just as relevant today as it was in the 70's.
I was born in 1965, brought up by parents who worked really hard, saved their money (mostly by not spending frivolously) who STILL had time to spend with my sister and I. I don't think they know the most important things they taught us were about conservation and frugality. Greed was not a word we knew. We lived happy and comfortable in an upper middle class town South of Boston Massachusetts, but didn't try to keep up with the Joneses.
I have always lived conservatively, but in the last few years with my two sons at 20 and 15 years old, I have grown more concerned with the way the world is going and with the state of the economy...I am sure if you are reading this you completely agree.
So when I saw this book it practically jumped into my hands. I am always searching for books to add to my library which are relevant to living self-sufficiently.
I was interested in where the authors are now 34 years later and came across Mort Mather's blog! http://mortmather.blogspot.com/
I am so passionate about the future and how we ALL can become more self-sufficient...we need to be less reliant on the Government and Banks...I wish I could tell the world how to LIVE!
To really LIVE is to be able to live on your own terms, by your own means...so I started this blog to post all things interesting to ME, that I believe will be useful to others.
Find this book online...or go to Mr. Mather's blog site and get some information.
Here is a quote from the book in the introduction:
The real gross national product (all the raw minerals and agricultural products that come from the land) is less than the interest payment on the national debt. The United States currency is no longer backed by anything more than faith...."
"We have all become very dependent on government, big business, energy sources, labor unions, the banks, and even the weather. Independence from all of these may at sometime be a matter of survival. The bulk of this book is a documentation of how one family has prepared themselves to cope with any eventuality short of a nuclear disaster."
This was written in 1978!!! Imagine...
